This was designed for a teen girl, now a professional woman and it’s still her favorite spot when she comes home. It was meant for reading and being on her laptop and chatting with friends, too. There’s lots of vintage pieces from a Southern France shopping trip and cushions found, old, and new. I like to leave it a bit loose, which gives the room an inviting, come-hither quality.

Peaked ceilings mean there’s about 125% more drywall and that always looked unresolved to me, so, when the ceiling is sloped I’ll pick another treatment, here it’s painted paneling in my go-to white paint, Benjamin Moore Simply White (Sherwin Williams Cosmetic Peach is a close match to the wall color). Materials are important and this room has a mix: textiles, metal lamps, the rush seats of Charlotte Perriand chairs and the inlaid wood tables. It makes it not too sweet — a room to grow with.
Yes, it’s the same dhurrie rug, it was so large we could cut some for upholstery and bind the rest for the rug. Claiming that whole space for the banquette is better than having lots of fiddly things. It makes it a destination.
It came later, but organically, and I realized that it could have hung anywhere in the house — and that proved there was a real consistency of eye throughout the house —sometimes art doesn’t need overthinking!
