That’s right—no drywall is left uncovered! The batten board makes it immediately feels like an older house. Also, there’s no recessed lighting — not one! Everything is a fixture, and that feels very old-fashioned too.

It’s funny, nearly every room in the house has that batten board and it is painted white in Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee, but I wanted depth of coziness in here. It took a while to find this green— Sherwin Williams Oakmoss. It’s dark but not too dark, and isn’t Kelly green, pine, or hunter. It doesn’t scream ARMY GREEN either. It’s the perfect shade!
It gets hot — but also cold in the morning. These ultra-heavy curtains are like a blanket — I love the feeling of sleeping in a room with curtains that heavy. As a kid on the ranch we’d roll up the rugs in the summer, so this rug is more like a mat—it makes sense in the heat.
We (my partner designer Eric Hughes) both love nostalgic Old California. I grew up on a ranch and I love the materials associated with that, like wood, iron, and leather.
Adding the beams. As decorators we don’t always think about architectural elements, but when you work with enough architects and contractors, you start to see their perspective. This bedroom is a new addition and adding the beams makes it feel more congruent with the age of the rest of the house.
Some people find solace in a bed and two nightstands, but I find that depressing — I need layers! I want art, a good paint color, nice curtains, big nightstands and good lighting. To me, you’re either a TV-in-the-bedroom person or you’re not. I’m not. But I like all the little things.
