The day bed, upholstered in a melon fabric, is one of my favorite pieces for a room that needs to play a lot of roles. This has a lower shelf that rolls out to be a trundle or lifts to become a large bed. If there’s a guest, it’s easy to move the lightweight vintage bamboo chair to another spot — there’s flexibility here.

The wallpaper and the melon-colored fabric was the start with color, a good place to begin a room! The rest of it came in pieces—we added the ottoman and pillows when the homeowner was ready. You don’t always have to do it all at once. I always say, it’s more fun when you wait until you feel good about it.

I will never say no to pairing a woven shade with fabric drapery. It always makes a room look inviting and finished.

I like the height of an ottoman or coffee table to match the height of the sofa — it just feels more natural and looks cleaner. And I’m big on having little drinks tables next to any upholstered pieces. If someone’s curled up on a chair or sofa, they shouldn’t have to reach too far for a place to set something down.

Benjamin Moore Chantilly White is our go-to for a crisper white and I like Farrow & Ball Pointing for a creamier one. And I love Benjamin Moore Dixon Brown, it’s a perfect chocolate brown!

In smaller rooms, every inch counts — so I’m always thinking about how we actually move through the space. That’s why I chose a round ottoman with a tray instead of a traditional table. It keeps the flow open and the bumps to a minimum!
