Top Bedroom Trends for 2026: Modern Styles & Design Ideas

May 8, 2026 - by The DesignShop Team

You know good bedroom design when you see it: a soft, serene palette, window treatments that let in (and also totally block) sunlight, and a sturdy, cozy bed you can really curl up in. But all too often the bedroom can feel like a design afterthought, even though it’s an important space dedicated to essential activities like relaxing and recharging.

Knowing — and following — the latest bedroom trends, though, can be a shortcut to setting up a much better sleep space for yourself. Embracing modern materials, colors, finishes, and design styles can make all the difference, and that’s exactly where this guide comes in. Let these seven trending bedroom styles inspire you to give your room a makeover. You just might notice you’re sleeping better — and spending even more time resting — once you like the look of your space.

1. Natural Elements: Wood Accents, Rattan & Organic Textures

There’s a reason biophilic design has been so popular for the last couple of years; there’s just something so soothing about using nature and its colors as your decorating muse. You can take natural inspiration literally by bringing in plants or installing skylights in a space to maximize natural light. But incorporating more abstract natural elements like organic-shaped furniture, earthy shades, and woven materials can also work wonders. Just take this textured and tranquil set up as an example.

If possible, you’ll want your bedroom’s anchor pieces — your bed, a side chair, a dresser — to be made of materials like wood, stone, and leather, since these elements all exist in the natural world. Add an extra layer of tactility with a piece of art that depicts the great outdoors, as shown here. Accessorize with pieces made of natural materials like rattan and cane. And don’t forget that floor and wall coverings can be an opportunity to go a little more natural, too. You can try a sisal or jute carpet underfoot and grasscloth on the walls. With grasscloth, the real deal can be pricey. A fool-the-eye vinyl can help you stretch your bedroom budget and still get that calming, outside-meets-inside look.

2. Modern Styles: Japandi, Minimalist & Wabi-Sabi

Maximalism might be having a moment in interiors again, but even those who love a “more is more” look tend to want to go more streamlined in a sleep space. That doesn’t mean you can’t make a strong aesthetic statement, though. You just need to embrace a pared-down, modern style, and that’s where the Japandi, Minimalism, and Wabi-Sabi design movements come in.

Minimalism used to have connotations of being sparse, cold, and bare, but the latest versions of it have embraced warmer colors, tonal textures, and a few more furnishings than before. As for Japandi and Wabi-Sabi styles? Considering that they put an emphasis on wooden finishes, simple furniture silhouettes, soft colors, and hand-made objects, they’re inherently calming aesthetics perfect for bedrooms.

The room you see here is a great Japandi example. The decor blends Japanese-adjacent elements like the Noguchi style lantern overhead and and the gorgeous “wabi-sabi” (the principle of finding beauty in imperfection) vibes of the hand-cut ceiling paneling with the hallmarks of Scandinavian design (think: the liberal use of white to brighten up dark days, natural materials like linen drapery and wool blankets, and warm, dimensional lighting). All of the furniture features clean lines and tends to be lower to the ground, giving the space a contemporary twist.

The upshot here? If you lean into a design style, just make sure it’s a visually quiet one. That way, your room will whisper chicness instead of shouting it.

3. Trending Colors: Warm Neutrals, Earth Tones, & Blues

Color is maybe one of the most important tools for creating a vibe and setting a mood in a bedroom. So it’s important to know how to use today’s color trends to your decorative advantage. Sticking to a palette of trendy, unsaturated warm neutrals like cream, beige, or blush will definitely make your space feel like a soft landing. But they’re not the only hues that can help you rest and recuperate.

Don’t discount the power of earth tones like the jade green above — or sage, moss, terracotta, or even tree trunk brown. Saturated colors can still be soothing; it’s all about the shades you select. Plucking a hue from nature is inherently grounding, so even if it’s dark and just a little bit moody, it’ll still have a cocooning effect versus a jarring one.

Blue is another bedroom favorite for a reason. It’s also found in the natural world — sea and sky — and it’s cool in tone but still very nurturing.

No matter which of these on-trend hues you choose, the easiest application of them is painting the walls. Then you can build out a palette of three to five shades with the textiles, artwork, furniture, and decor you select for the space.

4. Statement Walls: Textured Paint, Wallpaper & Accent Finishes

Textures, patterns, and accent finishes have dominated the decorating world lately, so it’s no surprise these trending elements can work for bedrooms, too. If you choose to create a statement wall, you can keep almost everything else in a room visually quiet without worrying about the design falling flat. That makes this trend a great one to follow if you’re less confident in your decorating skills.

When it comes to accent walls, you have a couple of different options. Wallpaper is maybe the most obvious one, with textured paint — like a limestone wash, for example — being a close second. You can also opt to cover a wall in an accent wall treatment. Wainscoting or picture frame molding requires less material than floor-to-ceiling wall paneling, which is shown here with the built-in cabinetry. But keep in mind that you’re only going to cover a single wall (or maybe two at most; this room has wallpaper and wood accents). So the relative cost of this bedroom project won’t be as much as if you papered or applied a wall covering to the entire room.

Make sure you choose the right wall(s) to highlight. In a bedroom, you can’t go wrong with wallpapering or otherwise accenting the bed wall; it’s the natural focal point in most bedrooms, and the contrast created by a statement wall will only emphasize that fact more.

5. Mixed Materials: Contrasting Textures & Finishes

As it turns out, opposites attract, even in the world of bedroom trends. One of the easiest ways to create a fun bedroom scheme is by embracing contrasts in terms of colors, textures, and finishes. The only catch? You won’t want to go too high-contrast because power clashing can be a little chaotic.

This bedroom gets the mixed materials bedroom trend totally right. First, you have a contrasting but complementary color scheme of mint green wainscoting and red accent textiles. The rattan headboard and woven nightstands feel grounded, while the bedside lamps are glitzy gold and glam. Finally, the white solid bedding is so simple, it lets the chinoiserie wall covering shine. The thing about embracing contrast is that it creates balance naturally. This makes your eye feel at ease in a space, and that’s always a good thing in a bedroom.

Trim in Play

6. Bold Flooring Statements: Patterned Hardwood & Wide-Plank Floors

Wall-to-wall carpeting used to be the gold standard of floor coverings in bedrooms. But the hardwood flooring trend is now coming for bedrooms everywhere, and it makes a lot of sense. Not only does wood flooring add a natural touch to a space, it also brings tons of charm and character to a room. It can be more hypoallergenic than rugs as well, mainly because it’s smooth and non-porous and therefore easier to clean.

When you want a little bit of boldness, though, just any old hardwood won’t do. Finding something laid in a fun pattern, like a herringbone or parquet, can jazz up the space with its irregular geometry. Or you can consider wide-plank floors, which typically include any wood flooring with planks wider than about 5 inches across. They’re super striking underfoot because they’re larger, making it easier to see the wood grain.

Wood floors are also easy to cozy up with small area rugs or faux sheepskins. You can try one right by the side of the bed. The trick is looking for something small and simple in appearance so it won’t outshine the beauty of the wood.

7. Wellness-Focused Design: Calming Materials & Sustainable Finishes

Current bedroom trends have come a long way in terms of wellness. It’s no longer enough to just have a pretty space. Designers are creating total sanctuaries that support sleep and optimize health, down to the very materials used to furnish and decorate.

Start with zero-VOC paints on the walls and Greenguard-certified furniture, both of which won’t off-gas nasty chemicals into the room. Similarly, natural wool rugs can be a better choice than synthetic blends. Small appliances like air purifiers and humidifiers can create the optimal indoor air quality.

Aesthetics matter here, too. For a calming effect, stick to quiet colors, matte finishes, and tonal textures over bold, garish patterns and energetic colors. Make sure you have window treatments that support total darkness while you sleep and breathable fabrics like cotton or linen on your bed. Details like this may seem small, but they matter.
